from the former home of an artist
Georgia O’Keeffe moved from New York City to New Mexico after the death of her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz. In 1945, she purchased an 18th-century, 5,000-square-foot property in Abiquiú and used it as her home and studio until, at the age of 96, she moved to Santa Fe. There, she passed away two years later.
Agapita Judy Lopez, O’Keeffe’s assistant during the last decade of her life, described the artist’s daily routine, which included scouting the area for wild herbs and plants and collecting and storing them meticulously in a large, well-organized pantry that remains as it was when she left. This stone came from the foundation of the house. When we found it, it had a desiccated sprig of rosemary attached. We imagined it was part of a collection of herbs she consumed, and treasure it as a symbolic connection to her everyday life and practice.
