from a home destroyed in a hurricane

This rubble was collected in December 2024, eight weeks after Hurricane Milton made landfall west of Sarasota. Just before that, Hurricane Helene killed 221 people in the same region. Industrial debris accumulated on the shoreline, in the mangrove forests and in drainage systems. This tile fragment was collected in front of a vacated apartment complex. The bottom floor is open to the elements. Mattresses and furniture are half-buried beneath several feet of sand. Next door, construction on a luxury high rise is underway.
