On August 17, 1999 at 3:01 p.m., a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey for 37 seconds. According to local figures, over 18,000 people died, nearly 50,000 were injured and over 5,000 went missing. The İzmit earthquake was one of the deadliest natural disasters in Turkey’s modern history.
