from an abandoned school

After South Sudan won independence in 2011, it descended into a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions of people. Violence broke out in the capital, Juba, creating deep scars in the land and its community. This rubble sat in an abandoned school playground surrounded by a soon-to-be-shuttered hotel and football stadium. As Juba becomes a city dominated by diplomats and foreign organisations, the playground acts as a meeting place for them. This rubble is a reminder of continuing violence and a political elite that has prevented progress.
