from the foot of Garisenda Tower
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Bologna was famous for being the City of Towers. Over the years, structural issues, earthquakes and the changing city landscape have taken their toll. Of the towers that remain, Asinelli and Garisenda are the most famous. Garisenda leans significantly, causing worries about its stability. Both are closed for repairs.
