The active volcano, Erta Ale in the Danakil Depression has erupted four times since 2005. In the local Afar language, its name means smoking mountain, and the pit at its southern point is referred to colloquially as the gateway to hell. This desert region can seem to be on the verge of blowing up in a second way, due to its political volatility.
