from the extraction of natural resources
Lake Assal, a vast salt crater lake, is used by Afar people to extract and sell salt. It is the third-lowest point on the Earth’s surface and the fifth-most saline body of water in the world. Rubble like this piece, containing fossilized remnants of leaves formed tens of thousands of years ago, is sold by the side of the road. It is from an ancient part of the world that was once flooded by the sea and is now a dry and scorched desert. Temperatures are dramatically rising and land is becoming increasingly inhabitable. Will the sea life we see today only be visible as fossils in the future?
