from the repurposing of land for tourism
Colombian history is marked by conflicts over land ownership. Today, tourism demand is so great in the Chapinero district that it has spawned a construction boom of single-room apartment buildings developed to satisfy demand for Airbnbs and other short-term rentals; in effect, driving out local communities. Meanwhile, in the countryside, drug cartels and Marxist guerrillas are fighting each other for control over raw materials required for the production of cocaine. This rubble represents the dichotomy within Colombia and its unsteady path toward peace and prosperity.
